Wrong foundation shade: can you return it?
The short answer
It depends who got it wrong. If you picked the wrong shade, you're relying on the shop's policy, plus the 14-day right to cancel if you bought online. If the shop sent the wrong shade, or it doesn't match its description, you have legal rights whether you bought online or in a shop. CCR reg 28 CRA s.11
You picked the wrong shade
- Shop policy: check the retailer's own policy. The two we've checked, Boots and LOOKFANTASTIC, only take back unopened items for a change of mind.
- Bought online: the 14-day right to cancel may apply. It ends if you broke a hygiene seal on a product that can't be returned for hygiene reasons, and the shop can take off money if you handled it more than you'd need to in a shop. Reg 28(3)(a) Reg 34(9)–(10)
- Bought in a shop: there's no legal right to return something because you changed your mind.
The shop sent the wrong shade, or it doesn't match its description
- Goods must match their description. CRA s.11
- If you told the seller what you needed before buying, and reasonably relied on their advice (for example, a shade-match in store), the product may need to be reasonably fit for that purpose. That doesn't make every shade you dislike a fault. CRA s.10
- These rights apply online and in shops. You normally have 30 days to reject the goods for a refund. CRA s.22
The shop's mistake"I ordered Warm Beige and got Cool Ivory"
A change of mind"It looked different on my screen"
Frequently asked questions
Should I keep a screenshot of the listing?
Yes. Shade descriptions and colours on screen vary, so a screenshot of what you ordered is useful evidence.
I've opened it. Can I still cancel an online order?
Possibly. Opening alone doesn't end the right. It ends only if the product was sealed, can't be returned for hygiene reasons, and was unsealed after delivery. CCR reg 28(3)(a)
