Ingredients question

Are steroid skin-lightening creams allowed?

The answer

GB: Banned in cosmetics

No, not as cosmetics. Glucocorticoids, also called corticosteroids, are banned in cosmetic products in Great Britain. That includes skin-lightening creams sold as cosmetics.

Banned in cosmetics

Glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) are on the list of substances cosmetics must not contain (Annex II, entry 300). This is about cosmetics only. Steroid creams a doctor or pharmacist supplies as medicines are covered by different rules.

What this doesn't tell you

This page is about legal status only. A product being allowed doesn't mean it's right for your skin, and a product being banned doesn't tell you how risky an old bottle at home is. If you're worried about a reaction, speak to a pharmacist or GP. The entry covers glucocorticoids, not every substance that might be called a steroid.
